What is Sonography (Ultrasound)?
Sonography in orthopedics – often also referred to as musculoskeletal ultrasound – is a modern, radiation-free imaging technique used for the diagnosis and follow-up of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system. With the help of high-resolution ultrasound equipment, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and soft tissues can be visualized in real time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sonography (Ultrasound)
Is the ultrasound examination painful?
No. Sonography is a painless examination method. The ultrasound probe is moved over the skin with light pressure. As a rule, patients find the examination straightforward and well tolerated.
Do I need to prepare for the ultrasound examination?
Usually, no special preparation is necessary. The examination can be performed directly during your appointment. If needed, I will ask you to make the area to be examined easily accessible.
How long does an ultrasound examination take?
The duration depends on the specific question and the area being examined. As a rule, an orthopedic ultrasound examination takes about 10 to 15 minutes, including discussion of the findings.
Can ultrasound replace an MRI?
In many cases, sonography already provides meaningful findings, especially for soft tissue complaints such as muscles or tendons. In certain situations, however, additional imaging (e.g. MRI) may be necessary. I clarify this individually with you.
Can ultrasound also be used for follow-up monitoring?
Yes. Since ultrasound does not involve radiation exposure, the examination is very well suited for follow-up monitoring, for example to assess the healing process or the success of treatment.
Will I receive the results immediately?
Yes. The findings are available immediately after the examination and are then discussed with you in a clear and understandable way. This allows the next diagnostic or therapeutic steps to be determined right away.
